Interview for “How to Create Your Perfect Northern Beaches Wedding; 16 Local Experts Advice for Couples”

Hi I’m Becky, I’m the founder and owner of Poppies and Lace Floral design. I live on the beach side of Narrabeen on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Ive always been a flower lover since an early age, collecting flowers on walks with my mother and making flower gardens by the seaside. My love for flowers has blossomed throughout the years leading me to study floristry and become a qualified florist in a flower shop before establishing my own business in floral design.

I’ve always been very creative and a lover for arts, in my spare time i love to paint and draw and do crafty little projects. When I’m not flowering up a wedding or an event I’m often found at the local flower power sourcing some new goodies for my garden or going for nature walks around the beaches.

1. HOW AND WHEN DID YOU START YOUR LOCAL WEDDING BUSINESS?

Poppies and Lace was created by my love of experimenting with colour and flower forms. Ever since starting my flower journey i have always been noticed by others as having unique and different creations full of detail and a variety of natural soft colours often with a pop of colour. Poppies and lace was officially established in July 2015 when i realised i couldn’t just do “everyday bunches” in a flower shop but wanted to completely let my creative side out and share my love of flowers by creating beautiful unique arrangements for events and weddings.

2. WHERE DOES YOUR INSPIRATION COME FROM?

My inspiration definitely comes from the natural world, i love to create wild and whimsical arrangements that are romantic and mimic nature to a certain extent. My arrangements often have berries, nuts and dried flowers as well as foraged elements which is inspired by creating a natural organic approach to floral design. I think my arrangements are also influenced by my creative personality and i feel very attached to each arrangement making sure i have all the elements to make it complete as if it was one of my art pieces. My inspiration also comes from the fact that there are so many beautiful flowers in different colours and forms that are just waiting to be made into a completely new design, theres always a new arrangement waiting to be found every day which i think is so exciting!

3. YOU WORK WITH A LOT OF BRIDES, WHAT ARE SOME TIPS YOU’D GIVE TO COUPLES TO CREATE THEIR PERFECT WEDDING?

I definitely would recommend sharing a of variety images and visual inspiration with your florist to reflect what style your going for, this will definitely be appreciated by your florist. Also to express what it is you do like and don’t like in each photo or style of your images, this way your florist can create something unique and special for your wedding day that reflects the style your going for without replicating an already made bouquet.
Let your florist know about your wedding environment from location to styling as this has a lot of influence on flower style and how your arrangements will be arranged to compliment the surroundings on the day. Be open about your flowers don’t base your arrangements on one type of flower, you may find yourself disappointed when you find out that one particular flower isn’t in season. There are so many stunning flowers around, base your flowers on a colour palette and style. One type of flower won’t be the make or break of your bouquet its the combination of colours and style that influence the overall look.
Another tip i would suggest is to let your florist know your budget, it will save a lot of time in planning your wedding as your florist can let you know what beautiful arrangements they can do for you within this budget. The most important tip is to trust your florist, we want your flowers to look absolutely perfect! 🙂

4. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WEDDING TREND?

My favourite wedding trend is definitely a flower crown! Even before i was a florist i absolutely loved wearing flowers in my hair haha! Don’t think i will ever get over them.

5. WHAT WEDDING TREND DO YOU WANT TO SEE GO AWAY FOREVER?

Traditional round rose ball bouquets!

6. ANY OTHER ADVICE FOR THE BRIDE AND GROOM?

Give yourself plenty of time to organise your wedding it takes longer then you think to plan a wedding! Most importantly just breathe and enjoy the process try not to let it consume you! xx

Flower Crown Workshop | Hen’s Night

Poppies+Laceflowercourse-93

Photography: Montana Wilson Photography | Florals: Poppies and Lace

Poppies and Lace held a Flower Crown workshop at the Amazing ‘Cafe Del Mar’ on Kings Street Wharf. The Workshop was organised specially for a Hen’s Night, the girls hired a private room with a courtyard for the workshop were they were able to sip on champagne as they made their crowns before enjoying a fabulous lunch overlooking the amazing harbour views.
We set up an array of flowers to create a relaxed garden party feel where the girls were able to feel like they were amongst a flower garden. Becky the Owner of poppies and lace, did a demonstration of how to make a flower crown before the girls walked around our designed garden and picked any flowers they would like to make their crowns. At the end of the workshop the girls all had their individual photos taken before joining in for a group shot overlooking the harbour.
